Nice at the Belle Epoque

Exhibition inaugural at the Museum gallery from February the 17th to May the 28th, Museum of the photography, 1 Place Pierre Gautier, 06000 Nice, open everyday from 11am to 6pm except Monday.

 

The new Museum gallery exhibits masterpieces from the collection of the Charles Nègre photography Museum. This exhibition shows the transition who is happening in the middle of the 19th century between a rural society and an urban society. With this transition the city of Nice is becoming the capital of the cosmopolitan french riviera. Before the french riviera economy produces only grape, corn and oil and the harbor of Nice was the only harbor of the Savoy duchy. The tourism born at the end of the 18th century and raises up in the middle of 19th century with the the railroad development. This period entitled the Belle Epoque is characterized by an economic, a social and a technological progress. The first tourists (aristocrats, moguls, high up civil servants, politicians) have the same way of living. They live in big houses and spend a lot of time in entertainment. During the summer days they go to their country houses or to the spa or seaside resort like Nice. For keeping this rich and famous people has made an important town - planning policy (buildings, ...) who has transformed the city. At the Belle Epoque the touristic season becomes in October until April and includes also the carnival.
