Built between 1899 and 1901 the villa Massena is a villa who belongs to the classic neo style. In 1919 the grand son of the general Massena leaves by will the villa to the city but ask to the major to create a museum who will celebrate the memory of his ancestor. Since 1978 the front and the roof are classified by the french historical monuments administration. The both have been doing up by the city of Nice in 2008.
In this villa an exposition who gives a tribute to the Promenade des Anglais through the history has opened his doors. Everything begins at the end of the 18th century when the city welcomes the non french for curing their health. At this time the doctors said that the air of the sea is the best medecine for curing is body.
After 1815 the city recieves an important english community and a pastor Lewis Way gives the money for building a path along the Baie des Anges who will become the Promenade des Anglais. At this time we can see that the famous people don't leave near the Promenade but on the hills around the Promenade. Between 1832 and 1860 the king of Sardinia tries to regulate the buildings but the linking with France in 1860 broke these regulations.
At the end of the 19th century the Promenade des Anglais becomes the heart of the fashionnable soiety on the french riviera with russian aristocrats and rich european businessmen who comes here with trains and boats.
The second metamorphosis of the Promenade happens during the thirties with the mass tourism. The french Front populaire gives many holidays and the tourism becomes more democratic. this democratization will involve new type of building (cheaper) and a birth of a new cultural spare - time (jazz, rock, rap). Now the purpose of the major of Nice is to classify the Promenade des Anglais into the patrimony of the humanity.
