The pebble

The pebble is a stone who contains all the geological history between the Alps and the mediterranean sea. They have been made with many ores : granite, gneiss, orkase, grè, limestone. The action of the glaciers, the torrents and the rivers plays an important part in the birth of the pebbles.

Many pebbles have minerals breaking materialized by calcite with complex design and be the witnesses of the Alps history. To the source until the sea they follow the rivers. After a little storm the sea takes an opal colour. It's due to an optical effect : the Tyndall effect.

We can find these pebbles on the beaches but also ont the continental seale who is very limited because the sea has important deeps few meters from the sea side. Many species of fishes leave in the mediterranean sea like the famous Ange of the sea who gives his name to the bay of Nice.

The level of the sea has fluctuated since the glacial episode. The men has begun to use the pebbles four hundred and thousand years ago in Terra Amata. They use it as tools or for building their homes. The using of pebble is perpetuated in architecture for creating gardens.

The pebble with his caracteristical form fascinates also some contemporary artists ((Ben, Jean - Louis Cantin, Lyonel Koura, Bernard Pagès, Bernard Reyboz, Armand Scholtès) by his regular roundness and his polishes surfaces.
