The New National Museum of Monaco introduced an axhibition about the italian sculptor Fausto Melotti who is one of the most important italian sculptor these last fourty years in Italy. Melotti has helped to developp Milan as an international art center. His art work is veru characterized by a boring style until the immateriality. Fausto Melotti art work announces the minimal art and the arte povera.

Born the 8th of June 1901 in Rovero (Italy) Fausto Melotti studies the famous italian artists of the Renaissance when he was in the highschool. He didn't become immediatly a sculptor. He succeeds to obtain a degree in the Polytechnical school of Milan and he tries to become a musician first.

In 1935 Fausto Melotti meets Gio Ponti who is the artistic director of the Richard Genari manufactory and the fondator of the Domus review. Their personnalities are very different : Ponti is volcanic and extraverted but Melotti is solitary and shy. But Ponti will support Melotti in spite of the cold receptions of the critics after his exhibitions and Ponti will also incitate Melotti to travel all over the world.

The friendship between Ponti and Melotti will be decisive during the 1950's and the 1960's. This firendship will have theoricals and practicals results. The Board of the Domyos review will accept to publish some articles written by Melotti between 1948 and 1968. Towards these articles we can understand the meaning of the Melotti's art work. The article entitled "the uncertainty" written by Melotti and published in Marz 1963 (number 400) is a real manifest.

In "the uncertainty" Fausto Melotti makes a distinction between two types of artists : those who are borned in the beginning of the 20th century and the others. The first were lucky to discover and to witness about the advents of the artistic avant - garde and were curious to experiment all the possibilities offer by these new languages and mediums. For the artists born after the beginning of the 20th century the art is dominated by the market and some rich clients who want to classify each artist. Melotti prefers to defend the uncertainty.

The friendship between Ponti and Melotti will also have practicals results in decorative works (villa Planchart in Caracas (1957), the headquarters of Alitalia in New - York (1960)) in some exhibitions like "Italia 61" and also in hotels chains (hotel of Parco's chain in Sorrento (1964) and Roma (1965)).

The photographer Ugo Molas and the writer Italo Calvino will contribute to developp his success among the public. Towards his pictures the photographer Molas show us the sensibility of the Melotti's art work. The writer Italo Calvino gives a tribute to Melotti in the book entitled "the ephemerals". During the last ten years of his life Fausto Melotti will recieve some tributes and prizes in Milan, Florence and Venise.
