The Pierre Soulages exhibition

Exhibition from the 2nd of april to the 26th of june at the Picasso Museum, Grimaldi Castle, Marejol square, 06600 Antibes, open all the days except monday from 10am to 12am and from 2pm to 6pm (from the 16th of september to the 14th of june) and from 10am to 6pm (from the 15th of june to the 15th of september), fee : 6 €.

The painter and engraver Pierre Soulages has developped his own art style inside the informal art movement. The will of this movement is to break the links with the cubism, the surrealism, the harmony, the equilibrium, the proportions, the composition and the structuration. Pierre Soulages integrate early this will when he is involved by the Fine Arts examination. The mediocrity and the conformism of the teatching incitates him to have a new watch on painting. During a trip in Paris Pierre Soulages goes aften to the Louvre Museum for watching the exhibitions of Cezanne and Matisse. He goes often also to the Fabre Museum in Montpellier.

After the second world war Pierre Soulages moves to Paris. He paints abstracts peintings without any meaning where the black color dominate who look like the landscape of his childhood. He realizes his canvas quickly with the tools used by the kraftmen (big brushes, big knives). He doesn't frame his paintings and he doesn't give any titles to them. He just indicate the size and the day they have been painted. During the fifties he paints big size canvas on the ground. In 1946 the curator o the Salon d'Automne refuses to showcase the Soulages painter and he must exhibites his art work at the Salon des Surindépendants (1947). The curator didn't like the dark side of the Soulages paintings.

Pierre Soulages exhibites his paintings in France (Paris), in Germany (Münich, Essen), in England (London), in United - States and in Brazil (Sao Paulo). We can also find his paintings in the collections of the biggest museums in New - York and London. But Pierre Soulages belongs definitively to the story of the painting when he uses for the first time the reflexibility of the light on a black surface and baptizes it "the outrenoir" (beyond the black color). In front of the Soulages paintings (56 canvas in the exhibition) the spectator fells himself as being inside their own space and their own intensity. The physical sensuality of the Soulages oaintings gives a strong energy until the meditation.
