Henri Matisse, a paddle of objects

Exhibition from the 24th of june to the 24th of september at the Matisse Museum, 164 avenue des Arènes, 06364 Nice, Cedex 4, open all the days except monday and some holidays from 10am to 6pm, fee : 10 €.

The exhibition speaks about the connection that exist between the painter Henri Matisse and the objects he has accumulated during all his artistic career. Curiously this connection has never been described by any authors in spite of his importance in the art work of the painter. The objects helped Matisse to look for and to find the rightest expression for explaining the world around him and for expressing his several facets.

African mask

Matisse represented simplify objects in a colorful background for showcazing all the connections that exist between them and their landscape. His goal is to create an emotion. This simplification of the objects appears inside the Matisse art work's when he begins by curiosity and instinct to detach himself from the western civilization and also from his own mentors for finding the inspiration inside the African art. The masks and the stools of west Africa (Ivory coast, Dahomey) touch deeply Matisse by their sensibility. They help him to express new volumes, new tones and open new ways for his painting.

Objects from Marrocco.

The colorful background appears inside the Matisse paintings when he attracts himself with objects made in Arabia and in Asia. Matisse develop his attraction for the eastern objects when the eastern mania becomes very high in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. He will use for his paintings some chairs, tables and braseros when he lived in his apartment near the cours Saleya in Nice and he will also use moucharabiehs in Vence. These objects are made minutely and give another perspective to his paintings.

The objects from the far eastern attract also Matisse by their blue and white colors. These both colors give another tonality to the Matisse paintings. Matisse will also attract himself by Asia because the cultured, the artists and the kraftmen can use and develop the art of calligraphy made with a brush. The relationships that Matisse has developed with his objects will rise up in the last years of the painter's life when he will create his last paintings in his studio full of light inside the Regina hotel.
