The imbhola's exhibition
Undiscovered canvas proposes during August and September 2016 to showcase the south african ceramist Simphiwe Mbunyuza. This artist inspire himself with the traditional symbolism of the Xhosa people he belongs for creating. Simphiwe Mbunyuza look at the themes used by the Xhosas craftsmen for painting the usual objects or for given them more attractive. The Simphiwe Mbunyuza's study helps also to preserve these themes. Simphiwe Mbunyuza integrate after all the themes inside his own art work.
The word "Imbhola" means make up in the Xhosa's language. This make up belongs to the body art movement and can take some different forms like paintings or ornament. The Xhosas make themselves up with red argil for stimulating their creativity. When they use the red argil they look like different for the other south african bantus who call them "Amaqoha" or "AmaXhosa". Some other distinct motifs like small painted points or make up points can be done around the eyes for giving an higher importance to the make up.
