At the beginning of the 20th century the fashion was the former Orientalism among the members of the nobleness, the intellectuals and the upper middle class. The members of these social classes improve a real interest for the exoticism and for all North African cultures. During that time the painter Henri Matisse lives in Collioure but under the advises of his nearest friends (Henri Evenapoel, René Past and Georgette Agutté) he decides to travel to the Biskra oasis. This oasis is on the border between the Tunisia and the Algeria and it becomes the place to be after the building of the railroad. Some rich and famous people (Bartok, Gide, ...) live there just in front of the desert doors spending their time with dancing, walking and watching some running.

Henri Matisse leaves Collioure during the 1906 spring for going to Biskra and he thinks that he will spend fifteen days there. But he will spend one week by traveling by boat to Alger and by traveling by train to Biskra. When Matisse arrives in Biskra he improves a feeling who will dominate his his imagination all his life. He lets down the touristic folklore and the cheap exoticism for concentrating himself to the topics develop by the Orientalists painters (the harem, the desert and his inhabitants). He will paint two main canvas "Street of Biskra" and "Blue Nude" where he schematizes the woman body. Exhibit at the Salon des Independants the "Blue Nude" will be in concurrence with "les demoiselles d'Avignon" of Picasso. The critics against Matisse were tough and he decides to let down for a few time the plastic problems.
