Known for his book "la modification" (Renaudot prize 1957) written at the second person of the plural and also by his art books Michel Butor works as teacher (philosophy, history, geography) during the 1950's at the International School of Geneva. Michel Butor integrate the New Roman movement among famous writers like Alain Robbe - Grillet, Natalie Sarraute and Claude Simon). This literary style reject the traditional way of writing novels (intrigue, psychological portraits) for introducing a more contemporary vision of the world.
Michel Butor orientates itself also towards the art books with "Degree" (1960) and "Mobile" (1962). In "Mobile" he made some sticking (encyclopaedia, advertising, ...) for speaking about the American way of living. Some writers and critics think that he has introduced the hypertext in writing. Michel Butor will continue his collaboration full of curiosity with the artists in "Illustrations" who deals with crossed art works. The ICCA tributes today the one who has put together some artists in a huge exhibition in 2002.
