Lust for life

Since 1940 Hollywood tries to adapt the life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh on screen. The film director Vincente Minelli succeeds to find in Kirk Douglas the actor who look likes the famous character with his angular face, his short hairs and his lost look. The choice of Kirk Douglas will be definitively acted when he never asks any wage just only receiving a Van Gogh painting. The MGM producers couldn't buy any Van Gogh painting and Douglas worked for any wage. "Lust for life" follows chronologically the Van Gogh life. Everything begins when he was a preacher looking for the meaning of his life. Van Gogh made some drawings and one time he falls in love for a woman but she rejects him. Wounded he decides to go to Paris for becoming an artist.
In Paris he meets many artists like Gauguin and improves his own way of painting. The film director and his crew succeeds to show us on the screen the visual equivalent of Van Gogh painting by using the Eastman color process and some negatives for creating again the red of Paris and the yellow of Arles. Van Gogh looses his time and he decides to travel to Arles because he likes the South of France colors. He lives in a poor roof window but improve a deep joy when Gauguin arrives. The both painters have too different art styles and a violent fight happens. Van Gogh wants to kill Gauguin and he cuts his own hear. The Van Gogh brother Théo convinces him to go to an institution. After a long time Van Gogh seems to be cured and he follows his brother at Auvers - sur - Oise but during a madness crisis he kill himself in a field.
