The movie "Les Misérables" inspires itself from a novel written by Victor Hugo during the 19th century because some of the characters (the Thenardiers family) live in the city of Montfermeil. This feature film begins like a documentary where a crowd celebrate the victory of the French football team in the 2018 World Cup and ends in riots against the authorities. Among those who tribute the victory we can find the young Issa who will steal after a young lion inside a circus leaded by gypsies. This robbery will involve violences between all the communities (young, drug dealers, muslims, gypsies) living there. During that time a young police officer names Stephane integrates the suburb anti - crime squad and works with trained police officers. They receive the order to separate the fighters but they can't do anything for ending the fight and the young Issa lost one eye. A small flying plane filmes the fight and the purpose of all the protagonists will be to take back these pictures. Faithful to the French tradition ("La Haine", "Dheepan") and to the American tradition ("Training day") of suburbs films the film director Ladj Ly deals with a problem he knows well. With few money, and strong dialogs he succeeds to explain to the audience an universe leaded by misery. At the same time Ladj Ly open a school "The Kourtrajmé school" who follows the idea to train thirty students each years in directing, writing scripts and also film editing. "Les Misérables" has received two awards during the last Cannes Film Festival (prix du jury, prix de la citoyenneté) and it will represent France in the next Acedemy Ceremony Award in Hollywood.
