The first feature film directed by Kathleen Collins an African - American woman deals with the daily life of a couple belonging  to the middle class and living in New - York City. At the begining of the 1980's the African - American actors perfom only in parts leading by stereotypes (maids, prostitutes, ...) but "Losing Ground" stays something special because it gives a huge importance to intellectual work (painting, teaching). The script written also by Kathleen Collins is punctuating all the times by laughings and feelings at it announces the big American tv series like "Cosby Show" where African - American actors will have better places.
