The Spike Lee way of making films confront itself all the times to the American history. "Da 5 bloods" is realized when huge demonstrations happen towards USA after the Georges Floyd strangling by a white police officer. Spike Lee has already shot racist policemen in "Do the right thing" (1989) but today this violence has an impact all over the world. Fifty years after the Vietnam war ending four veterans go back to place for finding the body of their officer and also a treasure made by gold from the CIA who wanted to give it to the Vietcongs opponents. Everything seems to be easy but nothing will happen like that. Spike Lee show us first four old soldiers who asks themselves about the meaning of their involvement in a war against their own interests. he explains after the loosing of their youth ideals like struggles for solidarity replaced by individualism. At the end he underlines the complexity of the four characters by exhibiting us their failures : Otis is a Trump supporter, Paul suffers from a disease due to the orange agent, the third looks for his daughter. The support characters play also an important part in the story like Jean Reno performing a bad guy or Mélanie Thierry who wants to help the people of Viet Nam. The soundrack made by old Motown standarts, some references to the masterpiece "Apocalypse Now" is the recipe of success.
