"Africa Mia" comes from the will of a French music producer Richard Minier telling about the forgotten story of ten musicians Malians moving to Cuba for practising a lot. The Mali becomes an independant state in 1960 and the first president Madibo Keïta takes the decision to build structures for rising his country up. He asks to his culture minister to look for good musicians with the purpose to send them to Cuba for perfoming music and being music teachers after. Among the choosen people we can find Boncana Maïga who will be the main character of this story. When they all arrive in Cuba they integrate immediately the Alajandro Garcia school following the Rafaël Lay teaching. Under the name of "Las Maravillas de Mali" tributing the name of an island near the Florida coasts they record an album in which we can find the famous hit "Meeting with Fatoumata". In spite of the success the "Las Maravillas de Mali" adventure will end because Madibo Keita must leave the power in 1968 after a coup. All the "Las Maravillas de Mali" go back except Boncana Maïga perefering living in Ivory Coast where he will work as TV host introducing young talented musicians. For directing "Africa Mia" Richard Minier travels to Cuba, filming the Egrem studio and finding old musicians and places wheres the "Las Maravillas de Mali" members have lived. This documentary has also help the last survivor of the band Boncana Maïga to move again in a place where everything has begun for him.
