A cow - boy in the coton

The Lucky Luke adventures, script by : Jul, drawings by : Achdé, Lucky comics editions, 48 pages, 10, 95€.

For the third collaboration between the screenwriter Jul and the cartoonist Achdé we can find their heroe Lucky Luke staying inside a world he doesn't understand the codes. He moves in the deep south of United - States five years after the end of the civil war (1860 - 1865) whose memory is always present like the Trump presidency proves it. Lucky Luke receives by will a coton plantation because the owner an old lady without any children loves his adventures she has learnt in papers. When he arrives on place he discovers two differents way of living : the African American people working hard without any wages and the White planters. All the planters live like artistocrats do but with very ridiculous sides. They are all full of prejudices and cruals against the African Americans. The script writer Jul makes there a reference to the famous book "Gone with the wind" written by Margareth Mitchell during the 1930's trying to promote this world far from the reality. Lucky Luke doesn't like the planters way of being. His purpose is helping the African American becoming free but he should fight against a racist organization the klan. The cartoonist Achdé knows well the United - States and he uses his knowledge for drawing the ridiculous klan wardrobes finding also his inspiration inside the famous Alan Parker movie "Mississippi burning" (1988). At the end Lucky Luke will succeed to win with the help of the first African American marshall Bass Reeves. The American history has forgotten his name but Reeves was very efficient and stays a long time among the Natives tribes after escaping the plantation he has borned. The American motion picture industry has also built the myth of White and blue eyes cow - boys in spite of the fact that many of them were African American because the wages weren't high. A new Lucky Luke album appears as the event to dive more in the American culture and now Jul and Achdé have created the Angela character a young teacher who looks like the American political activist Angela Davis.
