François Truffaut finds his own inspiration for shooting "Mississipi mermaid" inside "The bride wore black" he has directed with Jeanne Moreau. On the Reunion island Louis Mahé (Jean - Paul Belmondo) a rich planter waits for a boat "The Mississipi" who brings him a woman names Julie Roussel (Catherine Deneuve) he has known towards letters and he wants to get married with. But the woman he meets doesn't look like to the woman of the picture he has received before. No matter with he married her and his happiness will be short because she leaves suddenly with his money. Louis Mahé looks for a private investigator and follows also his own inquiry until the French Riviera where he finds Julie. Always in love they decide to run away together. François Truffaut has chosen with care his two main characters. Jean - Paul Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve perform in a strange duet where the man seems to be fragile and the woman is cute, secret and sometimes immoral. François Truffaut follows the chronology of the William Irish book and it's something special. He let a huge part to improvisation because the actors must learn the text few minutes before playing. François Truffaut succeed to keep the attention of the spectator in a raod movie where people move a lot (Réunion island, French Riviera, city of Lyon, Alps) with wonderful travellings.
