Roger Fenton

Since February 2022 Russia leads a war against Ukraine. This conflict make us think about another happens 160 years before at the same place. At the beginning of 1850's years the Russian tsar Nicolas the first follows an expansionist policy in the area of the black sea using the weakness of the Ottoman empire with the purpose to take the control of the holly places in Palestine. A war between the French, the Brit and the Ottomans against Russia is declared in autumn 1853 until march 1856. During that war the profession of war photographer will be created with Roger Fenton as the first. This painter becomes photographer by curiosity and builds the Royal Photographic Society (1853). Fenton loves ethnology and he has already made some pictures of the cities of Kiev, Moscaw and Saint - Petersbourg. The English governement sends photographer in Crimea for doing the war advertising but it was a failure because they weren't professionals. Under the advice of the publisher Thomas Agnew the British governement decides to choose Roger Fenton for going to Crimea giving him money for his work. When he arrives on place Fenton must resolve several problems. His laboratory studio was a heavy van taken as target by the Russian artillery. Fenton works at dawn for protecting the picture framing against the heat and at the sunset after the fightings. The Fenton van catches also the attention of the soldiers disturbing the military operations. His pictures don't show dead bodies or wounded people because the British governement want that and pay for that and they stay far from the more realistic articles written by the Times journalist Thomas H Russel. In June 1855 Roger Fenton leaves Crimea and moves to United Kingdom where he is received by the queen Victoria and becomes someone famous.
