The Jean - Baptiste Thoret documentary names "Michaël Cimino, God bless America" show us the American landscapes and the American people who have deeply influenced the film director during the seven movies he has filmed. His short filmography owns two masterpieces ("The deer hunter" (1978) and "Haven's gate" (1980) illustrating how Cimino was a genius man. Everything begins in New York City when he makes some TV spots for advertising. At the beginning of the 1970's he moves to L.A. for writing scripts like the one of "Silent running" (1972) or "Magnum Force" the second part of Dirty Harry adventures. Clint Eastwood likes his way of doing and buys the rights of the "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" movie where Cimino imposes his own style builds with raw characters and beautiful landscapes underlined by cameras. His next movie "The deer hunter" (1978) will help him becoming famous because he is the first speaking about without any taboos of the young Americans GI from the middle class fighting in Viet Nam and going back home broken by this war. During the 1978 Academy awards ceremony he will receive five awards including the best director and looks like a lucky guy but he will loose his chance two years after. The "Haven's gate" movie deals with the Johnson County war during the 1890's years between rich cattle breeders and farmers and he will have all the money he wants from United Artist for directing. This movie is a masterpiece like the director cut of August 2013 Mostra shows but at the beginning of the 1980's it isn't the same thing. The shooting happens five years after the end of the Viet Nam war and at the same time some Iranian have taken the control of the American Embassy in Teheran. A nationalist wave overcomes the United States and the first screenings in November 1980 were a failure. The people and the film critics including the New York Times and the Hollywood system reject "Haven's gate" and also Cimino considered by critics and Hollywood as a black sheep. Rejected by the film critic Michaël Cimino writes with Oliver Stone "The year of the dragoon" script building a violent and crepuscular story five years after "Haven's gate" but the film critics will never let him in peace saying without any evidences that he his the one who has killed the New Hollywood. In spite of their hatery the film director Jean - Baptiste Thoret has met Michaël Cimino and moves with him towards the American landscapes he loved and recorded his life memories. The Cimino voice looks like a wire until the steel town Mingo Junction (Ohio) where many inhabitants has performed as extras in "The deer hunter". All say that Michaël Cimino has understood their life and put on screen a testimony about their way of living far from the cliches.
