The "Elvis" biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann deals with a story that begins in 1955 when a manager and cicus director from Holland names Andreas Cornelius Van Kujik known as the colonel Parker meets a young singer in a country festival (Gran Ole Opry). Parker understands quickly the potential of this man and buys his contract with Sun Records for few thousand dollars and building the singer career. The film director Baz Luhrmann finds his inspiration inside the Milos Forman movie "Amadeus" where the jealousy between two famous music composer Salieri and Mozart plays an important part until the will to destroy Mozart improves by Salieri in spite of the fact he knows his genius. The relationship between Parker and Elvis Presley is leaded by greed. The real name of the colonel Parker is Andreas Cornelius Van Kujik and he has escaped form Holland because he is involved in a killing. When he arrives in Unted - States he takes the identity of  a man working in the US Army and becomes a career in several circus as director. Another famous rock singer Jerry Lee Lewis compares this relationship between the both as a tamer with a monkey. Parker is also a gambler and he losts and needs money all the time.

Elvis Presley comes from Tupelo a small city near Memphis (State of Mississippi) and he has many African - Americans friends. The music he performs is also deeply inspired by the balck music and the politicians of the deep south who are racists don't really like that. The young women love the Elvis suggestive swaying on stage underlined by the Michaël Curtis movie "King Creole" (1958) but the right thinking people don't and when he goes to the army between from 1958 to 1960 and gets wedding with Priscilla everything stop. At the begenning of the 1960's the colonel Parker takes some contacts with Hollywood for shooting movies with Elvis as actor because he knows since the beginning he likes James Dean and follow the will to be an actor. Elvis Presley will perform in some second rates films playing guitars and doing the play boy and the fans thought he wasn't a rock singer. The come back happens in the 1968 christmas when he should sing traditionnal songs by contracts but the tv show producer Steve Binder imposes his own will. Elvis Presley must play on a minimal stage wearing leather clothes. After the show success he will record famous songs but the colonel Parker is indebted to Vegas casinos and must accept a contract in which Elvis performs on stage for saving himself.

The colonel Parker was a manipulator and he knew the Elvis fear about killings. During the 1960's American leaders like John Fitzgerald Kennedy his brother Robert and the reverend Martin Luther King have been shot down by killers and the assassination of Sharon Tate and the bloody Altmont concert end this decade in violence. Elvis Presley needs a safe place for living and Parker tells that Casinos Palaces and Graceland are the place he looks for. The shows system is something easy for Parker because he can control Elvis and gamble all the time but for Elvis it isn't the same. Becoming the caricature of the rock singer he was he takes too many medecine and eat too much. The relationship with Parker will finish in 1973. The main characters perform by Austin Butler (Elvis Presley) and Tom Hanks (the colonel Parker) involve themselves highly in the movie. Hanks inspires himself by is own story for being Parker because a manager as him has leaded few times his own career. The colonel Parker is the bad guy but what will be the reaction of people if they have the opportunity to lead the career of a famous rock singer ? "Elvis" show us the both side of the American dream the dream (glory) and the nightmare (drog, broken life).
