The Catherine Ségurane character a young woman coming from poor background is deeply connected with the Nice city story. She symbolizes the woman fighting spirit owing by some others famous French woman (Jeanne d'Arc, Jeanne Hachette). In the middle of 1543 the relationships between the French kingdom leaded by François the first and the dukedom od Savoie directed by Charles the third weren't good. François wanted to take the control of both cities Geneva and Nice for having much more influence and he concluded an agreement with the turkish Sultan for doing this. 120 boats commanded by the bloody Barberousse disembark many troups with arms who will terrorize inhabitants around the city of Nice. For saving their lives they must go in the castle building on a hill dominating area. The French and Turkish troups use long scales for climbing castle walls for moving in. Everything seems to be over but suddenly an unknown woman takes the turkish flag with her right hand and uses a stick with her left hand for knocking down the flag carrier. Frightened by such action the attackers move away. Some witnesses consider that this woman doesn't exist but the city major at this time Pastorelli and also his son in 1608 have another point of view. The son Henri writes the story on a paper and names this woman "dona Maufaccia" like another writer Antoine Fughiera will do thirty years after. As an evidence Pastorelli and Fighiera underline the fact that many woman coming from different backroung defend the city against the assailants. Having all the story stays something difficult because the archives of the 16th century have been burnt in 1793 during the French revolution. The siege of Nice will finish in September 9th 1543 when the duke Charles the third troups arrive and fight with success against the attackers. Nobody has done the portrait of Catherine Segurane but with the help of testimonies we can tell her story. Borns in 1506 and daughter of a fisherman she lives in the Ponchettes near the harbor. Her name stays common and she returns to her daily life after the siege.
