From the Far West to Hollywood, from the golden rush to the Silicon Valley the state of California stays as the place of social, cultural and technological innovations. The French Riviera names created by Stephen Liegeard during the 19th century is first vacation place for famous people before becoming the spot for painters and get popularized by motion picture industry in the 1950's. California and French Riviera help people, ideas and creativity meeting together and the 109 asks itself about common points that can exist between these two lands in architecture. The link is easy to understand when you see the urban concentration near the water front (pacific ocean and mediterranean sea) and few people living in the inner land domanited by montain. The link influences many the inhabitants way of living, the moving and also the town plannning programs. The Californian architecture owning to the modernism movement borns during the 1930's caracterizes itself by big windows for let the light get in, by flat roofs and tries to break the border between inside and outside places. The architects choose a minimal approach, easy and fonctionnal by a cleaver using of concrete. We also can find such architecture on the French Riviera because since the Edwardian Times several styles put them together in that spot.
