With the help of unknwon archives the film director David Hertzog Dessites makes a documentary about the French awarded composer Michel Legrand in which he highlights his liking. The audience can regreat the fact that few moments are dedicated to the Legrand childhood, his beginings or the love he improves for jazz music but he underlines the part he has playing in the French New Wave including his collaboration with Jacques Demi the French musicals creator ("Lola" (1961), "Les parapluies de Cherbourg" (1964), "Les demoiselles de Rochefort" (1967), "Peau d'âne" (1970). In the middle of the 1960's Michel Legrand decides to move to Hollywood because he has been nominated at the 1966 Academy Award ceremony. With the support of Quincy Jones and Henri Mancini he succeeds to exist inside the Hollywood competitive background. The fame happens in 1968 with the Norma Jewison movie "The Thomas Crown affair". The film director didn't know how to do for editing the movie and he asks Legrand for doing something. Michel Legrand watches all the rushes and composes the film music. This way of doing stays something new in Hollywood and many people want to work with him after. "Once upon a time Michel Legrand" show us how Michel Legrand does puting together emotion, tension, anger but also a love of life.
