Ocean, mother of men

Exhibition until August 30th 2025 at the Romain Gary Library, 21 bis boulevard Romain Gary, 06000 Nice, open from Tuesdays to Saturdays (9am - 6pm), Thursdays (1.30pm - 6pm), closed Mondays and Sundays, admission free.

 

The Romain Gary Library arouses the people interest to the sea towards many books, printings or texts. The travel begins the link between sea and scientists from the Middle Age like the Jean de Scarobasco book written in 1230 dealing with knowledeges of this times including Ptolémée works. After the John Müller calendar is more depicts better winds and streams helping sailors in a time where Europe discovers the world (16th century). The underwater interests also scientists like the Abbey de la Chapelle who has invented the first diving suit for walking on deepest waters helping sailors or for caulking. Seas are also use for trade exchances as an 1749 edict show us. It codifies sellings, fights against thieves and speaks about taxes. At the end the seas builds many relationships with the artists as Chagall and his sirens does. Artists prefer staying there for curring themselves (Hector Berlioz) or for wounderring and highlighting after inside their drawings, paintings or printings (George Omry, George Roux).
