Nice and the Mediterranean have always built a strong relationship together because the sea has followed the metamorphosis of the city including trade making, pleasures, knowledge with Paul Valéry, Varamy and Risso. The mediterranean roots of the city from Nikaïa to Camenelum (Cimiez) until conrtemporary times own also a religious part with the introduction of christians, jews and muslims religions. The sea can be a place where the danger comes with  bloody pirats. The birth and the rising of tourism at the end of the 18th century with the participation and support of rich famous people has deeply transformed the shore and renews the city of Nice. Today it must resolves new challenges like weather changing, water climbing or pollution. The wish made by Paul Valéry in 1933 to build a specific mediterranean knowledge is more than ever potent.
