Supported by all the critics (Le Soir, Télérama, le Figaro, le Monde, ...) the American miniserie "Death by lightning" deals with the most ephemeral president's term at the White house office the Garfield between March 1881 to July 2nd 1881 when he was killed by a mad man names Charles Guiteau. This reflection about violence in politics seems something strange beacause Garfield and Guiteau share the same origins. The president rather spends time in his Ohio's house far from Washington dishonest compromissions. Nomited during the Republican convention in spite of the fact that he doens't be candidate of anything but after a huge success speech Garfield proposes a brad new program. This American civil war heroe wants to give more rights to African - American people, underlining education, protecting agriculture and reforming the state. His murder Charles Guiteau comes also from a poor background. Earlier he looses his mother and live a chaotic life with his father. Bad lawyer Guiteau follows studies for being priest but decides to make politics during Garfield campaign. In a speech he tributes Garfield because he waits for an ambassador job but rejected after the elections he decides to take revenge on Garfield by killing him when he was in Washington DC station. Known for his performances in differents mad men parts Matthew MacFayden plays a victim, exalted and braggart Guiteau. The murderer wasn't a bad guy for him but someone looking for appreciation improving the same feeling for the Garfield president than a fan with a star. The Garfield part performing by Michaël Shannon show us a resigned man owning a dark side because he didn't want to lead the country among the Washington swamp. The miniserie speaks about an opaque American period of time between the Civil wqr and the Edwardian times and shown us président Garfield as the best président that United - States don't have.
