In 1969 the physicist Gueorgui Demidov writes a novel in which his own experience inside the Russian concentration system names Goulag where he has spent fourteen years of his life. Arrested in 1938 at the high level of the political Staline's trails he finds himself prisoner of a totalitarist system. Filmes in the Riga prison (Latvia) including the performance of three famous Russian actors exiled since the begining of Ukraine war it opens by a surreal scene. An old convict goes in a room between two uggly faces guards who give him the order to burn many letters written by prisoners saying they are innocent people or asking help from the dictator Staline. A bloody letter succeeds to escape from the pyre and is received by a young naïve prosecutor performed by Alexander Kouznetsov looking like the fool discribed by Dostoïevski books. This integrated guy think that it's a malfunction and decides to meet the USSR Attorney general Vychinski for ending this mistake. The Ukrainian film director Sergueï Loznitsa obsessed by justice in each movie he makes trains his heroe towards filming in a cold, dark and sad universe where lies and manipulation play an important part. The Soviet totalitarist system grinds his most sincere believers and Loznitsa depicts this by the way how the system moves.
