Talking about times where nazis occupied France isn't something easy. Some film makers have tried by few succeed like Louis Malle with "Lacombe Lucien" (1974) or "Mr Klein" from Joseph Losey (1976). The Xavier Giannoli movie belongs to the best. Build by using recorded Corinne Luchaire memories the daughter of Jean and illustrated with flashbacks when she stays alone after a violent physical beating. During the 1920's a French names Jean Luchaire and a German names Otto Abetz coming from the left involve themselves in pacifism and friendship among peoples. Pacifism is trendy but it doesn't prevent compromises and Abetz receives money from nazis for changing side. Near the duet stays Corinne a young actress becoming famous after two movies "Rien sans barreaux" (1938) and "Le dernier tournant" (1939) but owning a short career because she suffers from tuberculosis given by his father. Appointed ambassador of Germany Otto Abetz brings relationships and money to his old friend Jean for leading the French collaborationists press. This choice is rejected by Julien Luchaire the Jean father and with jounalists he decides to join underground forces. Beffeted between sanatoriums looking like old people's home and his father easy life full of dates Corinne leaves her life control explaining that inside her autobiography "Ma drôle de vie" printed in 1949. Everything ends in June 6th 1944 when the allies land in Normandy. The last square of collaborators leave France for finding a safe place at Sigmaringen in the south of Bavaria. Inside the castle of the former imperial family requisitioned they construct an Opera house in which Jean Luchaire takes the information department. This Puppet governement stays only six months because allies move quickly. Jean Luchaire tries to escape to Switzerland and will be arrested by American forces. He was shot for felony and his daughter Corinne sentenced to ten years of national indignity. "The Rays and Shadows" brings now the truth about Corinne Luchaire helping also to highlight the talent to Nastya Golubova - Carax. Victim of the sexist violence at the Liberation times Corinne Luchaire confess to the film director Leonide Moguy who has helped her becoming actress that she doesn't know anything dealing with nazis crimes. With high budget "The Rays and the Shadows" doesn't want to forgive but just tries to understand dark times far from ideological debates.
