The diptych directed by Antonin Baudry introduces as blockbusters do with music and special effects the beginning of the Free French epic with the book adaption of "De Gaulle : une certaine idée de la France" from Julian Jackson. Oscillating between legend and reality the film maker opens it in summer 1940 when the French army collapse and the politicians give all the powers to the old maréchal Pétain ratifying the end of the Third French Republic. Sir Winston Churchill the Prime minister of United Kingdom (Simon Russell Beale) has tried to build an Union between France and Great - Britain for fighting agaisnt nazi forces but the French governement doesn't agree with. Now he bets on the general De Gaulle and the Free French in spite of the fact that the relationships between the both aren't well. The United - States plays also an important part inside the conflict and their industry will be a decisive asset but the president Roosevelt don't really like De Gaulle too. Surrounded by established actors like Benoit Magimel (Koenig), Niels Schneider (Leclerc), Felix Kysyl ( Jean Moulin) and Thierry Lhermitte (Giraud) Simon Abakarian has trained diction and gesture a lot. "De Gaulle : Resistance" reconstructe accurately the Montcornet and Bir - Hakeim battles who are the first steps of the Free France. The movie has the merit of doing an educational work depecting the real challenge of the Mers - El - Kébir sea battle highlighting the uggly game of the admiral Darlan (Mathieu Kassovitz) and the rally of French colonies behing De Gaulle even of the failure in front of Dakar could be the ending of everything.
