The director and cinematographer Jean Rouch is someone special in the motion picture industry. Influenced by the surrealism, the anarchism and supporter of the book "Ghost Africa" written by Michel Leiris he follows two careers as scientist and as film director. Jean Rouch discovers Africa in 1941 when he arrives for building bridges and roads. With a small camera and a tape recorder Nagra he speaks about the people and their customs. "Babatu and the three councils" is the occasion for Rouch to show us a forbidden episode of Africa history the african kingdoms. Between 1860 and 1899 the Djermas leader Babatu leads an army who goes to the conquest of the Gurumi country in the North of Ghana. Jean Rouch analyses the Babatu personnality and also his strategy. Babatu is a good jumper and his army is composed by determined soldiers but Rouch doesn't hesitate to show that Babatu was a slaves owner and trader.
