The beginning of "I'm not a witch" movie is a meeting between the film director Rungano Nyoni and the producer Juliette Grandmont after the screaning of the short "Mwansa the Great" at a Greek Film Festival. Born in Zambia Rungano Nyoni lives now in Portugal and finds her inspiration inside traditional Africans tales told by her gandmother when she was young in which she introduces humor, action and some imagination. "I'm not a witch" deals with the story of young child named Shula who frightened all the inhabitants of a little village in Zambia. They think that she owns special powers and decide after a ceremony to catch her to a small house with a white ribbon like a chain. If Shula tries to escape she will become a goat. The film director Rungano Nyoni uses here an analogy with the famous European tale "La chèvre de Monsieur Seguin" for showing us the cruelty against the women inside the traditionals Africans societies. Shula wouldn't be protected by the state of Zambia and she will even become a kind of attraction invited by TV shows or photographed by Western tourists avid for exotism.
