The American film maker Antoine Fuqua ("Training day", "Equalizer") directs a true story the slave Gordon history who has succeeded to escape from the Lyons plantation in Lousiana state in March 1863 after being bitten by a foreman. He integrates the 19th US Army corps and is promoted as seargent during the Port Hudson battle. Gordon becomes to be famous after his meeting with two photographers Pherson and Oliver working for the "Haarper's Weekly" a popular news magazine among the Union soldiers. The both do pictures about Gordon's back showing all the cruelty of slavery and who will be publish in July 1863. "Emancipation" show us the daily life of a deep South plantation in Louisiana state full of violence among a hostile nature (swamps, alligators, snakes) where slaves aren't consider as human being. Will Smith performs Gordon and decides with another slave leaving the plantation. At first everything is all right but the foreman and the keepers use dogs for finding them again. During his runing away Gordon must figth with an alligator and put oignon all over his body for disturbing the dogs smell. Full of will Gordon never surrenders in spite of sufferings because he follows his own goal finding again his family and moving away far from slavery. Builds on reality "Emancipation" is shot in black and white pictures for underlining better the drama living by Gordon.

I wish you would had commented how you feel about this film in comparison to glory and the infamous scene in the usa where denzel washington is whipped and sheds a lone strong face tear.

I feel myself sick when I watch a man whipped and when actors like Will Smith or Denzel Washington underline well towards their performances how cruel slavery was.
