At the end of the 1960's Italy is confrontated to something called "the years of lead" by a German writer in 1981. The right and left extremists try to take control of the situation using the wickness of the state, the strength of communist party and a bad public mood. For avoiding chaos the leader of Christian Democracy party Aldo Moro wanted to build a Government including communists in. This goal could be a success in March 16th 1978 but the Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti didn't want and Moro is kidnapped the same day by a terrorist commando killing five people around him. Inside his cell Moro writes many letters to the Minister of the Interior Francesco Cossiga and to the pope Paul VI for helping him. The terrorists wanted the realese of some political prisonners in jail but Andreotti refuses and everything would be over for Moro. Towards the movie Bellochio asks many questions : Do the politic know anything about the place where Moro is hiding ? Are they ready to do something for saving his life ? In 2002 the film directed has already shot the conflictual life of two terrorists. With "Esterno Notte" he refines the analysis of the characters because we can find terrorists losing their mind and their personality towards a speech full of non sense. The italian leaders at this time are leaded by fear or cold blood. The minister of Interior Cossiga doesn't know what to do and the Prime Minister Andreotti do anything in spite of the fact he has met Moro's wife. Among this disgusting people the pope Paul VI tries to have a talk with the terrorists and says he is ready to give money for making Moro free. The film director Bellochio filmes also the Moro's wife full of dignity with her children waiting for their father. The screening at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival was a huge success like the other's Bellochio movies ("Le traitre", "Vincere").
